Research of trailers - The Hangover and Shaun of the Dead (Christopher Kasapi)

Both teaser trailers and official trailers for a movie follow similar rules and genre. For example they both give away clips from the movie, but do not give away the storyline, leaving the audience feeling intrigued into what’s going on and making them want to watch the film.

The Hangover – Teaser Trailer
I found the trailer for The Hangover entertaining.  It clearly promotes the comedic genre of the film. At the beginning of the trailer there was a series of shot reverse shots as we follow a conversation between two of the characters. I found this part of the trailer quite slow, it didn’t make me feel excited about the film and could of been adapted as it doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the trailer which has a faster pace.

After the series of shot reverse shots, we are then shown titles. The titles appear on a cut and are brightly coloured on a dark background. The colour of yellow suggests the less-seriousness of the film, and also the flickering of the letter ‘E’ helps make the film seem less serious, once again promoting comedic aspects. The titles also tilt from the left, showing the company is probably a high budget company as it uses special effects in the teaser trailer.

All the titles are in what looks like neon lights and fancy colours. When the titles first appear on screen, we are presented with non-diegetic music. The music has a beat with it, and accompanies the montage of shots that show funny parts of the film. The music is a good choice as it sounds almost party like. It adds to the humour of the trailer, further detaching seriousness of the film..

The shots are not placed in a linear order. They are scattered around, showing a good quality range of editing. Titles appear in between certain clips. The help the audience understand what is going on, for example, the titles “Two days earlier” will prevent the audience from being confused as they will now be seeing scenes that don’t follow what they’ve previously seen, or that will help them understand what they have just seen.

When the movies name appears on the screen as a title, it is also accompanied by Phil Collins song In The Air Tonight and followed by the well-known boxer Mike Tyson who knocks out one of the characters whilst dancing to the song.  I think this is effective, because now, as well as the film attracting an audience of people who enjoy comedy films, and also fans of the director/stars, it also promotes a secondary audience. The secondary audience for this film will therefore be fans of Mike Tyson or Phil Collins

The trailer is then ended with the date the film will be released. It also contains a website, which we can use in our trailer. The website helps promote the film more as there will be extra scenes and backstage interviews, promoting a further excitement of the film.

Shaun of the dead – Trailer
We are first presented with a news report. The quality of this is quite poor. First there is a montage of colours, followed by a fuzzy TV screen before it merges into a clip. There is a point of view shot of a television followed by more clips and the fuzziness. The variety of news reporters we see show that there is a disaster going on, and is backed up by the news reporter saying, “Our nation is in crisis”.

The trailer uses cliché film techniques, for example warning the characters of something bad coming, just before it happens. For example the news reporter says, “do not panic”, and we then see a zombie in the living room with the two characters, which do panic.

The voice over throughout the trailer connects each scene. The clips are footage of the characters doing what the news reporter has just told them to do but in a comedic way. For example, they use vinyl records as a weapon, and try to remove a zombie’s head/destroy its brain by using a washing line. This also gives the film a genre of humour, with a secondary genre of action.

It is obvious comedy is the main genre because the clips that are shown are more comedic rather than action packed. Also there is music played along with the trailer that almost gives a carnival like feel. Also, when we see them using weapons, it goes ‘funnily wrong, for example the gun they use has no bullets.

On the action bit of the trailer, there is fast music and a lot of cuts, giving a fast tempo, further emphasising the genre of action. However the flashing bright lights, un-realistic actions hey characters do and the quick pan movements of the camera help emphasise on the comedic part of the film.

In this Trailer, there are no titles until the end where we are given the release date of the movie and also the movies name. The trailer relies completely on the voice over. I don’t really like tha.t I think that title’s are important things for a trailer.  I think that in our trailer we should use titles because it helps prevent the audience from confusion.
